Kale Lane Dahlias is a small dahlia farm in Northwest Washington. We love spending time in the garden with our friends, family, dog and chickens! In addition to tubers and cuttings, this year we are looking forward to offering local u-cut and bouquet pick-up for our summer blooms. We plan to keep our website up to date with what we are growing and are planning to sell in 2024. Check back often to see which new varieties have bloomed.

My craziest dahlia decision hands down is driving an 800 mile round trip in one day with my mom to pick up 1000+ dahlias. Not pictured is my roof box also stuffed with tubers 😆 What is your craziest dahlia nut moment?

If you’re a regular Dahlia Addict visitor like myself, you may of seen last nights update that we made the decision to move our store from listing our varieties to “Reviews Only.” It has been a concern of ours for quite awhile that our growing ability does not match the volume of customers Dahlia Addict has the potential to bring. With our capacity to grow just a few plants of each cultivar, I cannot match the 100s of customers asking. Our number one motivation for moving to reviews only is to reduce the traffic on our site and in turn make it an easier shopping experience for the customers who have made the effort to follow our newsletter. While it feels very intimidating to make this step, it feels like the right thing to do for our business. We are still here, still planning on a spring sale, just hoping to do so a little more calmly and quietly. We are incredibly appreciative of the work @dahliaaddictsite does for all of us dahlia nuts. Dahlia addict is an incredible resource for buyers and sellers!

FORM FRIDAY Formal Decorative dahlias to me are the quintessential dahlia form. When someone mentions dahlia, this is the form that stands out to me as the most uniform, neat, symmetrical flower (even though other forms have these same characteristics). Are you growing any formal decorative dahlias? You can look to the ADS Composite Listing, ADS Classification Handbook, or online ADS website when researching size, form and color of dahlias.

Dahlias in December?!? Why yes I do! I thought you’d never ask!! Cut these after our first light frost and haven’t been able to let go. Who else has a dried up bouquet? Let’s see them! I took a couple cuttings, never sprayed them for mildew or mites and lost them in a matter of days. But honestly, I wasn’t mentally ready to care for cuttings all winter so maybe it was a good thing. All I have is this stunning winter bouquet. I can’t wait for blooms in the garden!!

Introducing to you (drumroll please), Form Friday!! As I dig deeper into learning how to judge dahlias and hybridize my own I am actively working on throughly understanding how dahlias are classified. Each Friday during these non-growing months I’ll feature a different form explaining in more detail what characteristics make up that form. If you don’t already, I highly recommend getting a classification handbook, it is full of great information.

My girls spent the morning cutting out dahlia pictures from the @swanislanddahlias catalog making tests to see if I knew what bloom was what. I did pretty good 😅 I definitely started to struggle when they used big cactus form blooms!
